Finding The Work–Life Balance As A Business Owner

Running your own business is hard. You may start your business with dreams of spending more time with your family and planning work around your personal life, but it’s not always that easy. When you first start your business, you need to buckle up for late nights and early mornings. You need to prepare for self-doubt, small successes, big wins and going back to the drawing board to start planning again.


Owning and running your own small business takes hard work. It is essential that you find that work-life balance as a small business owner. You need to hustle hard, but you need to make time for your personal life too.


You may work harder than you’ve ever worked before when you start your own business. This could include 100-hour weeks, but this isn’t sustainable. If you do long hours every day your performance will decrease. You’ll also risk business owner burnout. This is definitely something you need to avoid, or it could destroy your business altogether.


When you run your own business, you will wear a lot of hats. You’ll be the face of your business, getting out there, meeting people and networking. You will also be the head of sales, looking to attract and sell to potential customers. Marketing will be down to you too, you’ll be responsible for marketing and promoting the business, products and services. Payroll, HR and Accounts will al be down to you as well.


The best business owners out there quickly see that they are not experts at everything. Even as small businesses they know they need to bring in the experts to deal with parts of the business. This is done through outsourcing. There is no need employ experts into your business. Instead you can outsource to the experts, so you gain all their skills, without the risk of employing someone. This allows you to focus on running the business, while the other bits are still being taken care of.


Set yourself working hours. If possible, arrange for an office or hot desk locally. Alternatively, create an office in your own home. This will give you a clear separation between work and home life. If you decide to finish at 3pm each day, you have a room you can walk away from and shut the door. This will help avoid working late into the night and missing that essential family life and personal time.
